Feeling heroic? If you’ve got the heart for the task, BMW’s got the bike.
- BMW is showing its Vision DC Roadster electric motorcycle as part of the company’s NEXTGen family of EVs.
- Powered by a low mounted electric motor with the battery pack sitting vertically above it, the bike promises to have weight distribution similar or better to existing sportbikes.
- Movable intakes mounted on each side of the motor are a styling element reminiscent of the classic BMW boxer motorcycle engine.
At its recent NEXTGen event in Munich, the Bavarian automaker rolled out a brand-new electric motorcycle concept. Known as the BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster (yep, that’s a mouthful), the bike gives us a peek at an electrified future.
Ready to (Silently) Rumble
Appearance matters with motorcycle buyers, and the Vision DC Roadster boasts design cues that make a bold statement. With its jagged angles and hunched profile, the bike’s aesthetic blends street-smart toughness and futuristic flair. BMW calls it “a highly emotional naked bike with electric drive.” Well, okay then.
A vertically oriented battery sits where an engine would normally reside. To keep things cool, there are two protruding side elements with integrated ventilators. The bike’s electric motor is shaped like a cylinder and located underneath the battery. When the electric motor is activated, the cooling elements flare like gills, letting you know the bike is ready to cruise.
This is definitely one of the less outlandish concepts out there. It’s easy to see this bike fitting into the current marketplace, though BMW hasn’t announced any formal plans to bring it to production in its current form.
“The boxer engine is the heart of BMW Motorrad – an absolute stalwart of its character. But, BMW Motorrad stands for visionary zero-emissions vehicle concepts, too,” says Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad, the brand’s motorcycle division. “The Vision Bike shows how we’re able to retain the identity and iconic appearance of BMW Motorrad in distinctive form while at the same time presenting an exciting new type of riding pleasure.”
