Lyft is expanding beyond traditional ridesharing into electric bikes, scooters, and even short-term electric car rentals, and has now partnered with charge provider Electrify America to deliver the juice to its rental EVs. Back in 2012, Lyft was founded as rideshare company. Since then it has expanded its reach to include developing an integrated network of on-demand autonomous vehicles in the U.S. with General Motors. It also partnered with Waymo to get 10 autonomous Lyft vehicles on the road in Phoenix.

In addition to partnering with GM on the autonomous vehicle network, Lyft also launched the Express Drive program with the automaker. The short-term rental program allows drivers to rent a vehicle not only to use as a rideshare but also as a personal driver, providing certain requirements are met.
In an expansion of its Express Drive program, Lyft recently introduced an electric vehicle fleet in Denver and struck a deal with Electrify America. Next month, drivers choosing the EV rental option from one of Lyft’s providers can fill up at Electrify America’s seven DC fast charging stations with 30 chargers. The price of a charge is included in the rental fee.
Electrify America has an aggressive growth plan, which aims to add approximately 19 additional stations and about 75 more DC fast chargers in Denver by the end of 2021. As Lyft expands its EV program to new markets, Electrify America will continue to lead the charge.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Rideshare companies are already taking heat for causing more congestion and therefore pollution. By integrating EVs into its fleet and setting up convenient and included charging, Lyft incentivizes its drivers to make an environmentally friendly choice when driving on the job.
