You subscribe to smartphone service, home entertainment, credible news sources, and music platforms, so why not a car? That’s the idea behind Care by Volvo, which puts you behind the wheel for an all-inclusive flat monthly fee. And starting on August 26, 2019, Volvo’s car subscription program got more appealing.
What is Care by Volvo? Good question. For one monthly payment, you get:
- Use of a car or SUV
- Roadside assistance
- 15,000-mile annual driving limit
- Ability to switch vehicles after one year
To subscribe, you use the Care by Volvo website or a smartphone app to apply for approval, order your vehicle if you’d rather not grab something off the dealer’s lot, and you’re done.
Care by Volvo expands to include V60, XC60, and XC90
If this all-in-one-payment plan sounds appealing, you’re in luck because Volvo recently expanded the number of models it offers through the program.
Initially, Care by Volvo was available for the XC40 entry-level SUV. Then Volvo added the S60 entry-level sedan to the program. Now you can choose those two models or the larger V60 Cross Country wagon, XC60 SUV, and XC90 SUV.
Monthly subscription rates range from a non-negotiable $700 per month to $800 per month. After you’ve been a subscriber for 12 months, you can change into a different vehicle. The subscription term is 24 months, after which you can re-up at whatever the current rates are.
Are there any downsides to Care by Volvo?
When you sign up for Care by Volvo, you’re paying a premium for convenience. Depending on your individual situation, it is likely that your monthly outlay would be less if you leased for a longer period of time via traditional methods, shopped for your own insurance, and paid for your maintenance visits.
Additionally, vehicle selection is restricted to pre-determined trim, powertrain, and equipment combinations. You choose the paint and interior colors, and you’re done.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles is also investigating the program to see if it violates state law, though regulators haven’t ordered Volvo to discontinue the program.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Volvo’s subscription approach is among the more affordable programs from an automaker. And it certainly makes life a little simpler and less restrictive. Just know that you’re paying a premium for this simplicity and freedom.
