Like every luxury automaker, Mercedes-Benz wants to be more than just a car company. Think: Lifestyle brand. So if you’re a Benz aficionado, you can not only trick out your car, but also accessorize yourself with everything from a backpack to an umbrella to a watch or Swarovski bracelet. Now Mercedes slaps its style onto an e-scooter.
- At the 2019 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, Mercedes announced it was throwing its hat in the micro-mobility ring.
- Mercedes follows other auto manufacturers in bringing its own branded e-scooter to market.
- By providing its own e-scooter to complement its electric vehicles, Mercedes can say it provides a green solution for every mile you travel.
It’s not surprising the brand would offer an e-scooter to complement its vehicles. Audi presented a quirky one that can carve up the sidewalk and recharge when you drive, while Hyundai offers a sleek, foldable design that makes it easier to tote around. BMW is even in on the game with its own ultimate scooting machine.

Expanding the family
Other than saying the E-scooter is part of the EQ brand family, Mercedes didn’t give up any more details except to say it’s co-branded with Micro – which is also responsible for BMW’s scooter. It’s probably a pretty safe bet the specs will be about the same as the others in the category, which reach a top speed of about 12 miles per hour and have a range of up to 12 miles per charge.
In its press release, Mercedes says, “E-scooters have only been allowed on German roads since June, and it is already hard to conceive of a traffic scene without them.”
Mercedes says its e-scooter won’t be available until early 2020.
WHY THIS MATTERS
By entering into the e-scooter business, auto manufacturers want to show that they can be the ones to get you there for the first, last and every mile in between.
