GAC New Energy Automobile Co. Ltd presented the Aion LX, the new flagship in its Aion range, at Auto Shanghai 2019.
This SUV is loaded up with state-of-the-art smart driving technology, including Level 3 autonomous driving assistance, and puts up some nice stats. Hightailing it from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds, faster than some self-proclaimed sports car models in the space, the Aion LX also impresses with a 373 mile range under New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standards.
On a mission to become a world class electric carmaker in three to five years, GAC NE is targeting annual production capacity of 200,000 EVS. That’s a pretty ambitious growth plan by anyone’s standards. But, they’ve put their money where their mouth is, investing $310 million in a state-of-the-art Smart Eco-Plant completed in 2018.
The LX comes on the heels of the successful launch of the Aion S, which racked up an astounding 23,000 pre-orders in 45 days. Accessibly priced at just under $21,000, the S is China’s first mass-produced EV to harness solar power. With battery range options of 248-317 miles and L2 autonomous driving assistance, along with the smart technology you’d expect, the S certainly offers good value. We’ll find out what the public thinks when it goes on sale April 27.
GAC NE expects to start production of the Aion LX, which also incorporates the S’s solar technology, in September. You can jump on their app and figure out how you want to customize yours because there’s a good chance you might get to in the near future. According to an article on electrive.com, GAC NE has its sights on the US EV market. They were already here testing the waters with the Enverge Concept car at last year’s Detroit Auto Show.
